While potentially based on paleofelids or false saber-tooths of the Nimravidae family, to many readers, the Hunters are indeed true-felines (as the books often refer to them) of their own evolutionary line, as mysterious in origin as they are in their cognizant bearing. It is acceptable (if not requested) that those attending ItM continue to refer to them as cats (felines, felids, etc…) in order to remain in accordance with the novels, and for the sake of simplicity during Role Play.

The Hunters are their own species. They are similar to the Named, but sustain broader shoulders and longer fangs. Their forms are of one solid hue. Many of them, with the exception of True-Of-Voice, look very much alike.

When Creating Your Profile:

The Hunters are a unified race. Their need for harmony forms the base of their society, and is so crucial that many of them have come to look the same. True-Of-Voice is given a greater range of colors than his followers. He is the 'Well-Spring' and so must stand out when positioned next to his people.
When piecing together your profile, it is asked that you utilize only pictures of Cougars and Panthera Leo (no male Lion images please) to depict your Hunter cat.
Don't forget, the image simply denotes appearance, not species, height, or weight.

When Naming Your Character:

The Hunters do not recognize names - they have, 'the words that belong'. They identify one another by specific characteristics, such as a short tail, chipped fang, or long scar. Two examples may be seen in Tooth-broke-on-a-bone and Quiet-Hunter.

The Hunter Tribe is a semi-nomadic band of felines (or paleo-felids) known for their predations on Mammoths. Each year they follow the migratory patterns of these thunderous mammals, relying on them for food and survival. In appearance they are similar to the Named. The only noticeable differences are their robust frames, broad shoulders, and extended fangs. While intelligent, their pattern of understanding differs from those of the Clan. Hunters retain the wisdom of speech and observation, but do not readily boast a sense of self. Their identity is communal, a stirring unity shared and heard exclusively by the Hunter Tribe through a telepathic link called ’The Song’ - an enchanting, mind-spoken rhythm - the many voices of past ancestors.

The Tribe has a single leader. It is solely within this felid that this Song surges forth. Throughout the various generations, this diplomat has held but one name (the ‘words that belong), True-Of-Voice, the ‘Well-spring‘ of the Song.
It is an inherited position and title, one seemingly unaffected by gender, as it may be carried by either a male or female. Following the death of the previous True-of-Voice, his/her offspring will assume the position and ‘name‘, to become the new ‘Well-spring’.
True-of-Voice lends the telepathic chorus onto all other true-born Hunters, a melody that will guide and comfort them throughout their lives. Many would say that these Mammoth-sentinels live forever bound within a dream, for the Song offers endless security, even when faint. When one feels sorrow, it gives joy. When one feels frightened, it bestows courage. When one is weak, hungry, or lost, the Song brings strength, nourishment, and direction - even if these occurrences are through ones own blissful zeal towards the melody itself. All else is nothing without the Song, It abolishes... completes all need, and all want.

If True-Of-Voice should die without a successor, it is presumed that the Song would be lost, and with its end, the Hunters would also meet their doom. They cannot live without the Song. Silence begets insanity.
For this reason, Hunters would give their very lives to protect True-Of-Voice and his/her young. It is thought that betrayal does not exist within the Tribe. All wants are satisfied with the Song, and it is suspected that one cannot harm True-Of-Voice without devastating the people as a whole.
The will of True-Of-Voice is apparently the will of all.

Hunters do not readily apply a sense of self to names (with the possible exception of True-Of-Voice) . They will however, answer to the ‘words that belong’. These are a set of terms typically denoting traits specific to the cat in question, such as ‘long-tooth’, ‘crook-ear’ or ‘pale-stripe’. These designations are issued only when seeking a reaction from another cohort, and are vaguely acknowledged by the name-holder itself.

Tribal eyes maintain a shuttered expression, as though their attention is turned inward, ever vigilant towards the presence of the Song. Despite this, it would be foolish to assume that these felids bumble about in a constant daze drugged by their lullaby, incapable of action or threat. As a force, their organization is unparalleled, their teamwork unmatched by any group-carnivore roaming the known territories. Their combined thoughts enable them to descend upon an enemy and shred it within seconds of its arrival. Hunters are supreme pack-predators, able to pull down the even largest of prey. They make for a lethal army of claws and teeth - one with which war is best avoided.
